DIANE DUFRESNE

International Diva

Although not widely known for her music in the United States, except perhaps by those music connoisseurs with a particularly sophisticated palette for the enticing voice of the otherwise internationally successful diva, Diane Dufresne has quietly been applying her creativity and art to canvas and paper with brush and pen.

Madame Dufresne was born in Montreal in 1944. She made her musical debut in 1965 and during the past three decades has become recognized as one of the most important entertainers of the twentieth century. Her career has spread across three continents and her concerts are consistently sold out.

At age twelve the artist’s mother died resulting in a difficult childhood for the up-and-coming star. The death of her mother, and a far less than happy upbringing ironically produced positive results. Dufrense drew on her hard times and transformed the negatives into a powerful source of inspiration. Her overwhelming energy is heard in her voice, and seen in her paintings. Her incredible musical success aside, her experience was exhausting. After spectacular performances for audiences as large as 80,000 she found herself withdrawing. The result again was strangely inspirational….Madame Dufresne turned her artistic creativity toward her other passion which for years she had ignored due to her grueling schedule; painting.

Dufresne studied art with the well known theologian Father Jerome. Her art fully reflects the automatisme she learned during her studies. The theory of automatisme suggests that one moves from a conscious state to a subconscious state resulting in a pure creation of that eternal moment. More commonly, Dufresne’s style might be best described as “abstract expressionism” very much in the same arena as Robert Motherwell. Dufresne views the purity of abstraction as a form of art that is inherently meaningful and capable of transcending cultural barriers. The artist believes that the art has the ability to communicate on a “universal level”. Diane Dufresne’s art is filled with enriched forms that are inspired by a spontaneous gestural action with no self-imposed parameters or limits.

Like the audio art she has been so well known for, her visual art is exciting, dramatic, fun, meaningful, and filled with the artist’s own being. Her paintings have been overwhelmingly acclaimed and now that they are finally being offered to the public, quickly acquired and collected.
